An 18-year-old accused of robbing a 12-year-old boy at gunpoint in Gilbert in February has been sentenced to prison.
Dyllin Keys, 18, and a 14-year-old boy approached the victim while he was riding his e-bike on a track near Greenfield and Elliot Roads shortly before 9 p.m. on February 6.
Keys had pointed a gun at the 12-year-old and demanded that he hand up his electric bike. He told the victim not to call the police or he would be shot. After Keys and the teen left, the victim dialed 911.
In the 911 call, the boy can be heard telling the dispatcher that his bike was stolen. He also mentioned that he “worked so hard for that” bike.
Gilbert police officers saw Keys riding the e-bike immediately after responding to the 911 call. The video shows the cop approaching the guy and bringing him to the ground while asking where the gun is. The other 14-year-old youngster implicated was apprehended on February 17th.
Keys was arrested and charged with armed robbery, aggravated robbery, aggravated assault, misbehavior with a firearm, and underage liquor possession. The 14-year-old was detained on accusations of armed robbery, aggravated robbery, aggravated assault, and fleeing a pursuing police vehicle.
On August 3, Keys pled guilty to armed robbery and received a five-year sentence.
Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell stated that the penalty sends a message that people who terrify children will “pay for their crime.””No child should ever have to look down the barrel of a gun and call 911 in tears after being robbed,” Mitchell added. “The fear in the victim’s voice was heartbreaking, but he showed tremendous courage by calling 911.”
