Residents across the nation are being urged to see if unclaimed property is listed in their name.

CINCINNATI (WKRC) — Residents nationwide are encouraged to check whether they have unclaimed property in their name.

Kentucky State Treasurer Mark H. Metcalf said his office has returned a record $86 million to rightful owners. According to Metcalf, the funds included forgotten bank accounts, uncashed checks, and other financial assets that are turned over to the Treasurer’s Office each year.

“Every dollar we return is a dollar back in the hands of families, small businesses and nonprofits,” Metcalf said in a media release.

The Treasurer’s Office receives millions of dollars in unclaimed property each year from financial institutions, businesses, and government agencies. Metcalf said the program’s purpose is to reunite owners with their money, not to keep it.

“We’re not here to sit on money — we’re here to return it,” he said.
