Memphis, Tennessee – The Mid-South is entering an extended period of elevated winter weather risk as lingering cold keeps the potential for snow and ice storms high through mid-February, following one of the largest winter systems of the season.
The National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center reports that below-normal temperatures are expected across the Mid-South through the Feb. 7–20 period. With cold air firmly in place, any storm moving through the Southern Plains, Ohio Valley, or Lower Mississippi Valley could bring snow, sleet, or freezing rain, creating dangerous travel conditions and potential disruptions.
This renewed concern comes after Winter Storm Fern, a massive system that stretched from Texas to Maine and affected more than two dozen states. Fern brought heavy snowfall to Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, and northern Mississippi, with many areas reporting totals exceeding a foot. Travel conditions worsened along major corridors including Interstates 40, 55, 65, 69, and 75, while school closures, supply disruptions, and scattered power outages were reported.
As cold persists, communities from eastern Arkansas and southern Missouri through western and middle Tennessee, Kentucky, and northern Mississippi could face further disruptions if strong storms develop. Transportation agencies warn that repeated winter events may strain snow removal and road treatment efforts. Prolonged cold also increases the risk of ice buildup on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses, particularly overnight and in the early morning hours.
Emergency management officials are urging residents to prepare now by checking heating systems, insulating exposed pipes, and restocking winter emergency supplies. Drivers are advised to avoid non-essential travel during winter weather and monitor updates from state Departments of Transportation.
While the timing of future storms remains uncertain, forecasters say the overall pattern supports continued winter threats. Additional advisories and warnings may be issued as confidence grows, with cold air and the risk of snow and ice likely recurring across the Mid-South through mid-February.
