At least 20 people were killed after a high-speed train derailed and crashed into an oncoming train in southern Spain on Sunday, Jan. 18, according to Spanish rail operator Adif.
Officials said a train traveling from Málaga to Madrid jumped onto the opposite track and collided with a train heading from Madrid to Huelva near Córdoba. Andalusia’s regional health minister, Antonio Sanz, warned the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue.
Authorities confirmed that 73 passengers were taken to hospitals with injuries. MarÃa Belén Moya Rojas, the region’s civil protection chief, said the crash occurred in a hard-to-access area, complicating emergency response efforts. Local residents brought blankets and water to help victims at the scene.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she was closely following the situation and expressed condolences to the victims’ families, adding that she hoped for a full recovery for those injured.
