LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A water main break at the intersection of 15th and Jefferson streets opened a large hole in the roadway Tuesday morning.

Photos from the scene show the hole is nearly the size of a car.

The Louisville Metropolitan Sewer District said the water main broke around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. Several nearby residents lost water service for hours, though service was beginning to be restored for some by noon.

“I got up around 4 this morning to get some water and there was no water, so I was wondering what was going on until I came out and saw all the mud and stuff out here,” said Lee Schultz, who lives across from the sinkhole.

Inside the hole, crews could see a brick wall and wooden railroad ties Tuesday morning.

The Louisville Water Company is also on scene assessing the extent of the damage. The intersection is expected to remain closed throughout the day.

Crews said repairs are expected to take the next few days to complete.
