A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for parts of eastern Kentucky, where accumulating snow is expected overnight into Monday.
The National Weather Service issued the advisory for Floyd, Letcher, Martin and Pike counties, including communities such as Whitesburg, Prestonsburg, Pikeville, Jenkins, Inez, Wheelwright, South Williamson, Coal Run and Elkhorn City.
The advisory runs from 1 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday. Forecasters expect 1 to 2 inches of snow, with higher totals possible in elevated areas of Pike and Letcher counties where heavier snow bands may form over higher terrain.
Meteorologists warn that the snowfall could create hazardous travel, especially during the Monday morning and evening commutes. Untreated roads and bridges may become slick, so drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance and use caution on rural and mountain roads.
Residents can check updated Kentucky road conditions at goky.ky.gov before traveling. Snow is expected to gradually taper off by late Monday afternoon.
