LEXINGTON, Ky. — Federal employees across Kentucky remain without pay as the government shutdown continues into its fourth week.
On Thursday, the Senate again failed to pass a GOP-backed measure to provide pay for federal workers who have continued to work during the shutdown.
The uncertainty affects a wide range of workers, from military personnel to air traffic controllers. Tyler Sutter, a UK student and Air Force Reserves jet engine mechanic, relies on his military stipend to cover college expenses. The shutdown has left him unsure about receiving future paychecks or being able to attend next semester.
“It doesn’t make you feel great, cause as a college kid I only have two kinds of income. That’s all I got to really live on,” Sutter said. He added that even if pay delays continue, he will keep serving, saying, “The money aspect can be secondary to everything else because the service comes first.”
The shutdown is also affecting other federal workers, including TSA and air traffic controllers at Bluegrass Airport, who are considered essential employees and must continue working despite unpaid wages.
Airport officials said operations remain normal and recommend travelers arrive 90 minutes before flights. Community members are supporting affected workers, showing gratitude and helping however they can, demonstrating the strength of local community ties.
