KENTUCKY — Deer spotted in western Kentucky wearing collars are part of a research study, not pets.
The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR) and the University of Kentucky are fitting some deer with GPS collars to track their movements and ranges in the region. On Friday, KDFWR shared an update on the project.
A map tracking daily deer activity from September 18–24 shows that deer were most active at dawn. Researchers noted that the deer aren’t traveling far for food, as acorns have fallen and are readily available.
Fish and Wildlife officials said movement patterns will change with the rutting season, which typically runs from late October to early December. The department plans to provide additional updates as the study continues.
