KENTUCKY — Most of Kentucky is currently experiencing moderate-to-severe drought, with Western Kentucky particularly affected, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

Meteorologists say this week’s expected rainfall will be largely beneficial. Kyle Wilkins of the National Weather Service (NWS) in Louisville noted that much of the year’s precipitation fell early, leaving the state dry in recent months. “Most of this won’t cause any issues. Most of it’s going to be absorbed by the ground and is much needed,” Wilkins said.

Pete Geogerian, chief hydrologist at the NWS in Jackson, added that while the rain will generally help drought conditions, there is a slight chance of isolated flooding, especially in eastern Kentucky from Wednesday into Thursday. He advised residents to have weather alerts and emergency plans in place.

“With lightning expected as part of this week’s storms, staying indoors is strongly recommended,” Geogerian said. Residents near creeks or low-lying areas are urged to stay alert during heavy rainfall, particularly at night.
