A Winter Haven man has been taken into custody by the Florida Highway Patrol in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash on US 27 near Francisco Street in June.
Christian Leon, 31, faces allegations of abandoning the scene of a fatal crash and obstructing justice by tampering with evidence. On September 8, the Florida Highway Patrol’s Traffic Homicide Unit detained him.
On June 28, FHP reported that Leon was driving a 1999 Ford Ranger pickup truck eastbound on US 27 near Francisco Street. At the same time, an adult male pedestrian attempted to cross the eastbound lanes of US 27.
The front of the Ford Ranger struck the pedestrian, who was pronounced deceased on the scene. Leon allegedly fled the site of the incident in his 1999 Ford Ranger.
According to authorities, Leon proceeded to Polk County, parked the 1999 Ford Ranger at an RV park, and briefly advertised it for sale on Facebook Marketplace. On June 29, FHP State Troopers located and seized a 1999 Ford Ranger.
Leon was arrested in Polk County and is currently being held in the Hendry County Jail. The crash is still under investigation.
