A Chicago man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for shooting a Lyft driver during a carjacking attempt, just days after serving a juvenile detention sentence for another carjacking, according to court documents. Deandre Milons was captured three weeks later after police say he carjacked another driver. He received a ten-year term in that case.
Milons was a Lyft passenger on July 10, 2024, when he pulled out a revolver and ordered the driver out of the vehicle in the 7500 block of South Dorchester Avenue in Grand Crossing, according to prosecutors. He allegedly racked the slide of the rifle and threatened to shoot the 31-year-old driver, who resisted. Milons shot him during the scuffle before fleeing. The victim survived.
Three weeks later, on August 1, Milons is accused of carjacking a 28-year-old woman in the 6500 block of South Vernon Avenue in Woodlawn. Prosecutors claimed Milons hit the woman in the head, threatened to shoot her, and demanded her phone and keys. The woman had never seen a gun, but she complied.
Police discovered the woman’s automobile a short time later. While authorities were guarding the vehicle and waiting for an evidence technician, the victim noticed Milons standing on a nearby street corner and recognized him as one of the carjackers. Officers arrested him. Detectives also included Milons’ photo in a lineup presented to the Lyft driver, who recognized him as the perpetrator.
During a subsequent court hearing, Judge Diana Kenworthy examined Milons’ juvenile record, which included armed robbery and gun possession in 2021, aggravated domestic battery in 2021, criminal trespass to a vehicle in 2023, and a juvenile incarceration sentence for an armed carjacking in January 2024.
“At just 18, the [defendant] has an extensive criminal background,” Kenworthy wrote, emphasizing the word “extensive” twice. “At the age of 18, he has committed five violent offenses, four of which involved firearms. Probation did not work. Juvenile court did not operate. He is not a contender for release.
Milons pled guilty this month to aggravated violence with a handgun and vehicular hijacking. Kenworthy sentenced him to concurrent terms of 15 years at 85% and 10 years at 50%. Milons should have slightly over 10 years remaining on his 15-year sentence after taking into account time served in the Cook County Jail.
However, there is a disagreement on the Illinois Department of Corrections webpage. Milons’ parole date is September 11, 2031, according to the agency’s public inmate search, which would be approximately five years after his admission to IDOC and significantly sooner than Kenworthy’s 85% of 15-year sentence. This looks to be a clerical error, but CWBChicago is confirming with IDOC. If the government confirms that Milons is truly set to spend approximately five years of a 15-year sentence, we will issue a supplementary report.
