A 4-year-old boy who was pulled from South St. Vrain Creek in Boulder County on Tuesday has died, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.
Emergency responders received a 911 call just before 5:30 p.m. reporting that the child had been swept downstream in South St. Vrain Creek, west of Lyons. The boy’s family had to flag down a passing driver to reach an area with cell service, causing a delay in making the call.
The family had been camping near the creek when the incident occurred. A second child was also in the water at the time but was recovered safely, according to the sheriff’s office.
First responders, including swift water rescue teams, searched on foot, by vehicle, and with drones. They located the boy just after 7 p.m., roughly a mile and a half downstream from where he entered the water.
Rescuers transported the child to a hospital in critical condition, where he later died.
The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office and the Boulder County Coroner’s Office are continuing to investigate the incident.
