A Texas resident stopped for a morning coffee and walked away with a life-changing lottery prize after buying a Powerball ticket that matched every number drawn in the May 2 jackpot drawing.
The winner, a Leander resident who preferred to stay anonymous, earned half of the estimated $20 million annuitized Powerball Grand Prize after splitting the jackpot with another winning ticket sold in Florida.
The lucky Quick Pick ticket was purchased from QuikTrip #4165 on East Crystal Falls Parkway in Leander. The ticket matched all six winning numbers drawn on May 2nd, including 25, 37, 42, 52, 65, and Powerball 14.
Because two jackpot-winning tickets were sold for the same drawing, the prize was divided between the Texas winner and a player from Florida.
After selecting the cash value option when purchasing the ticket, the Texas winner received $4,488,330.34 before taxes.
Coffee Stop Turns Into Multi Million Dollar Surprise
The winner stated that purchasing the ticket was not part of their daily routine.
“I’m not a regular lottery player, but I saw on a billboard that there had recently been a big jackpot, so the next morning when I stopped in at QuikTrip for a coffee, I bought a Powerball ticket,” claimed the claimant.
Several days later, the ticket remained in the winner’s wallet while the couple did errands.
The winner clarified that the objective was only to verify the ticket before throwing it away.
“A few days later, we were out running errands when I noticed the ticket in my wallet and thought, ‘I need to check that so I can throw it’. Only this time, when I checked, I saw that I had won. I was stunned. When my [husband] returned to the car, they said, ‘Are you okay?’ I told them, ‘I think we’ve won the lotto.'”
The winner explained that the spouse initially thought the emotion was exaggerated. The pair double-checked the numbers to ensure that there were no errors.
According to the claimant, they studied the ticket three more times before returning home and storing it in a safe.
“We’re planning to save the money for the time being until we decide what we want to do with it.”
