How to stay safe during a tornado
To stay updated on watches and warnings, monitor local news or use a NOAA Weather Radio.
If a tornado warning is issued, move immediately to a basement, safe room, or an interior room away from windows. If possible, bring your pets with you.
At work or school, follow established tornado procedures and head quickly and calmly to designated shelter areas. Avoid large open spaces such as cafeterias, gyms, and auditoriums, and stay away from windows.
If you are outdoors when a storm approaches, seek shelter inside a sturdy building right away. Avoid sheds, storage units, mobile homes, and tents, as they do not provide adequate protection.
Driving during a tornado is extremely dangerous. If possible, reach a safe shelter immediately. If that is not an option, stay low in your vehicle and cover your head, or leave the vehicle and move to a low-lying area such as a ditch or ravine.
