Electric Vehicles Offer Relief to Kentuckians as Gas Prices Surge

Kentucky (FOX 56) — As gas prices climb amid tensions involving Iran, many drivers are feeling the strain, with prices topping $4 per gallon nationwide and reaching similar levels across Kentucky.

For some residents, switching to electric vehicles (EVs) is proving to be a cost-saving alternative. Mike Proctor, who has been driving an electric car since 2012, said rising fuel costs have only reinforced the benefits.

“It becomes less and less expensive for us because we don’t have to buy that gas,” Proctor said.

According to AAA, crude oil prices remain elevated despite a recently announced two-week ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran.

Proponents of EVs say drivers can avoid the volatility of fuel prices altogether.

“Good for the planet, they’re good for your wallet, and if you think about it, who’s ever fought a war over electricity?” Proctor added.

Advocacy group EvolveKY is working to expand charging infrastructure across the state. Proctor noted there are currently about 165 charging locations in Kentucky, with roughly 90% available for free use. He also recommends installing home charging systems for convenience.

“And people ask, well, how long does it take to charge? I tell them eight seconds… that’s how long it takes to plug it in. Overnight, I plug the phone in, I plug the car in. They’re both ready to go in the morning,” he said.

With inflation data from the U.S. Department of Labor showing the largest monthly jump in gas prices in decades, EV advocates say now may be the right time for consumers to reconsider making the switch.

“If you’ve been thinking about it before… this is a good time to start thinking EV again,” Proctor said.
