Floyd County drivers in Indiana may need to leave home earlier as several major road projects begin in the coming months.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Drivers in Floyd County, Indiana may need to adjust their schedules as a major highway project begins in the coming months.
The project is part of the Indiana Department of Transportation’s plan to improve Interstate 64, which officials say will help reduce congestion in New Albany.
Crews have already started clearing trees along I-64 between Interstate 265 and U.S. 150 in Floyds Knobs.
“We’ve noticed a lot of trees coming down and you can definitely see the view a little bit more as you come down the cut you can see Louisville now and all the tress coming down, which is sad,” said Casey Hill, who regularly drives on I-64.
As preparation continues for the large three-year Improve 64 project, lane closures have begun.
INDOT officials said drivers should expect overnight restrictions from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on westbound I-265 between I-64 and State Street, as well as on both directions of I-64 between I-265 and U.S. 150 during tree and vegetation removal. Officials expect this clearing work to finish before April 1.
The Improve 64 project includes adding lanes, upgrading interchanges, replacing and repairing bridges and culverts, and installing new noise barriers, guardrails, and concrete wall barriers.
Full construction will begin this summer and is expected to continue through the end of 2029.
Drivers in Floyd County said they are already concerned about the impact.
“Here in the last week, it’s been terrible,” Hill said. “Big delays, a lot of reroutes that kind of thing so I don’t know, that’s a long time to have traffic like that, so hopefully it helps in the long run.”
INDOT has not yet confirmed whether crews will implement daytime lane closures during construction.
