FRANKFORT, Ky. (WYMT) – After a stretch of frigid weather, Kentucky Power is asking the Kentucky Public Service Commission for approval to spread out January’s fuel adjustment charge to provide customers some relief.
That charge, which would appear on March bills, is expected to nearly quadruple.
Kentucky Power wants to distribute the cost evenly across May, June, and July bills instead.
If approved, the change would reduce the average residential customer’s March bill by about $11.
The utility has requested a decision from the PSC by February 23.
The Kentucky Senate also passed legislation this week aimed at helping regulate electric customers’ monthly bills by allowing increased fuel costs to be spread out over time.
Senate Bill 172 would amend Kentucky law to permit fuel costs that are typically passed on to customers immediately to be distributed over longer periods.
The PSC has not yet ruled on a separate proposed rate increase by Kentucky Power.
