LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Drivers traveling along Interstate 65 and Interstate 264 in Louisville should prepare for overnight lane and ramp closures starting this week as crews begin traffic improvements ahead of a major summer interstate shutdown.

Construction gets underway Tuesday night, with crews widening and restriping ramps along designated detour routes that will handle traffic when part of I-65 closes later this year. The off-ramp from I-65 North to I-264 East will shut down at 9 p.m. Tuesday and reopen at 6 a.m. Wednesday.

A five-mile stretch of I-65 between Jefferson Street and I-264 is set to close for about two months this summer while crews replace aging bridges. During that time, traffic will be rerouted mainly along I-264 and Interstate 64.

To get ready for the closure, crews will add lanes at key ramps, update pavement markings and install temporary barriers and signs.

“These improvements are necessary investments in Louisville’s main transportation routes,” said Matt Bullock, chief district engineer for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

Several additional overnight closures are planned this month, including ramp closures between I-65 and I-264 and lane closures along I-65 South near West Broadway and East Oak Street.

Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, watch for posted signs and allow extra travel time during the overnight construction work.
