Louisville, Kentucky — A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for much of the Ohio Valley, with snow and brief icing expected Tuesday across southern Indiana and central Kentucky, potentially affecting afternoon and evening travel.

The National Weather Service in Louisville said periods of snow are expected to develop late Tuesday morning and continue through Tuesday night. Snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches are forecast for parts of south-central Indiana and north-central Kentucky, while nearby areas could see a coating to 1 inch. The snow is expected to be wet and slushy, which may reduce traction on roadways.

In some areas, particularly during the late afternoon and evening, a short period of freezing rain could mix in and create a light glaze of ice. Even minor icing may lead to slick conditions on untreated roads, bridges, sidewalks, and elevated surfaces.

The advisory includes portions of Indiana such as Clark, Floyd, Harrison, Jefferson, Scott, Washington, Orange, Crawford, and surrounding counties. In Kentucky, impacted areas include Jefferson, Oldham, Henry, Shelby, Franklin, Fayette, Scott, Harrison, Bourbon, Nicholas, and nearby counties. Cities within the advisory area include Louisville, Lexington, Frankfort, Jeffersonville, New Albany, Corydon, Shelbyville, La Grange, and Paris.

The greatest travel impacts are expected during the Tuesday afternoon and evening commutes, with lingering slick spots possible into the early overnight hours as temperatures remain near freezing.

Drivers are advised to slow down, increase following distance, and stay alert to changing road conditions. Road updates are available by calling 5-1-1 or visiting state transportation websites.

Although the advisory focuses on Indiana and Kentucky, parts of West Virginia could also be affected if precipitation shifts east later Tuesday night.
