Millions of Americans Can Claim Free Cash as State Unveils $622M in Unclaimed Funds

MILLIONS of Americans can claim from a $622 million pot that belongs to the people and not the government.

Millions of Americans may be entitled to money from a $622 million fund that belongs to the people — not the government.

In Austin, Texas, residents are being encouraged to claim funds tied to nearly 5.7 million individuals.

The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts currently holds $10.5 billion in unclaimed property across the state.

Unclaimed property includes assets ranging from mineral rights to forgotten deposits.

A portion of these funds belongs to everyday Texans, according to Comptroller Kelly Hancock.

Hancock has urged American families and business owners to reclaim what’s theirs ahead of the Christmas season.

She said:
“Every dollar in our Unclaimed Property program belongs to a Texan, not the government.

“This time of year, especially, even a small amount can make a meaningful difference for families.

“I encourage every household in the Austin area to take a moment to search — it’s simple, it’s secure and it just might put a little extra money back in your pocket for the holidays.

“I mean, my son, for example — when it was announced, we just decided to look and my son had a deposit from an apartment he had in Dallas when he was going to school there.”

HOW TO CLAIM

To claim a share, residents can visit ClaimItTexas.gov.

Claimants must enter their name or the names of family members.

This includes maiden names or the names of deceased relatives.

If unclaimed property is located, the website walks users through the steps required to file a claim.

According to the Comptroller’s office, the service is free and available to everyone in Texas.

Hancock emphasized that the funds could provide meaningful support during the winter months.

She added:
“You may have a little time while you’re sitting at home — you know, get on your laptop while you’re watching — or listening to Christmas music.

“This is a time where people have downtime, and so we really would like them to have their money back — and we want to do everything we can to help in that.”
