State Rep. Kam Buckner (D-Chicago) is helping Illinois seniors stretch their budgets by expanding the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), with the new provisions taking effect Oct. 1.
“At a time when the cost-of-living is rising, people on fixed incomes—especially seniors—deserve every bit of financial assistance we can offer,” Buckner said. “Expanding this program, which already helps low-income households, is a step in the right direction, and I’ll continue fighting for similar progress.”
Key changes include annually adjusting the maximum income limit for LIHEAP based on future Social Security and Supplemental Security Income increases. Eligibility now extends to households earning up to 150% of the federal poverty level or 60% of the state median income.
“I helped shape Illinois’ budget this year to focus on relieving the high cost-of-living,” Buckner said. “Utility payments are unavoidable, so reducing them was a priority. Proactive measures like this help low-income households get through challenging times.”
