Thursday night marked a momentous homecoming for one of Chicago’s most celebrated cultural institutions, as the Soul Train Awards returned to the very city where the legendary program first took root. The taping of the prestigious ceremony drew prominent figures and entertainers to the heart of the Loop.
Following a two-year absence, the Soul Train Awards made a triumphant comeback, and for the first time in the show’s history, the taping took place in Chicago. The occasion was graced by a distinguished and glamorous purple carpet, drawing some of the biggest names in entertainment.
Music luminaries and cultural icons convened at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Millennium Park to commemorate the highly anticipated return of the Soul Train Awards.
Originally launched in Chicago in 1971 under the visionary leadership of host and producer Don Cornelius, Soul Train served as a celebrated platform for music and dance throughout several decades.
“It’s a remarkable testament to the contribution that the city of Chicago has had on music, not just here in Chicago, but across this country and across the globe,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said.
Municipal and state officials were also in attendance at the event, proudly acknowledging Soul Train’s deep and enduring ties to the city of Chicago.
“It’s a part of the history of this amazing city. It’s a part of our culture,” said U.S. Sen.-elect Juliana Stratton.
A number of celebrities who proudly claim Chicago as their hometown were present, both as attendees and active participants in the program.
“I’m glad we get to honor the Chicago of it all, Don Cornelius and what he brought. Soul Train affected so many artists and gave opportunities to so many artists,” rapper Common said.
Among the highlights of the awards ceremony, Chicago-born music legend Chaka Khan was honored with the Classic Soul Honor, a distinguished recognition bestowed upon artists who have profoundly influenced the sound and spirit of R&B music.
Khan expressed that receiving the accolade in her hometown carried particularly deep personal significance.
“I’m overwhelmed. I’m mainly doing this because of the things I helped do for other people, and that’s what it’s all really about,” she said.
The Soul Train Awards are scheduled to air on November 27 at 7 p.m. on BET and CBS.
