Mother who tortured her 3-year-old son for months until he died receives life sentence

A 40-year-old mother from Colorado has been sentenced to life in prison following months of sustained abuse inflicted upon her 3-year-old son, which ultimately resulted in his death.

Samantha Kimberly received her life sentence on Wednesday after a jury found her guilty last month on charges of first-degree murder and two counts of child abuse, according to a press release issued by the Pueblo County District Attorney’s Office.

During the three-day trial, multiple witnesses testified that both the 3-year-old boy and his 14-month-old brother “sustained months of child abuse.” The older child suffered a severe brain injury that proved fatal.

On June 8, 2024, deputies from the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence in Pueblo West after receiving a call regarding a toddler who was described as “unconscious and breathing abnormally.” The boy, who presented with visible injuries, was airlifted to a hospital, where he subsequently died.

Kimberly’s teenage son was also found to have visible injuries and was transported to a hospital for medical treatment, after which he was placed under the care of the Department of Human Services. Prosecutors had initially charged Kimberly with felony child abuse, with the murder charge being added following the death of the boy, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed.

A second individual, Brittany Farmer, was likewise convicted on child abuse charges and was sentenced the previous year to 45 years in prison, according to local CBS affiliate KKTV.

Although authorities did not publicly disclose the full details of the abuse, it is evident that the case had a profound effect on those directly involved.

“I am deeply saddened and quite frankly, angry with the horrific details of this tragic situation,” Pueblo County Sheriff David J. Lucero stated at the time of the incident, as reported by KKTV. “This is one of the worst abuse cases I have seen in my 24 years in law enforcement. No child should have to be subjected to this kind of torture and abuse.”

District Attorney Kala Beauvais released the following statement:

“Today’s sentencing brings this tragic case to a close and holds the defendant accountable for the murder of her son and the abuse she inflicted upon her children. We are grateful for the teamwork in ensuring these children had a voice in the courtroom. This case will leave a lasting impact on everyone involved and will be remembered as one of the worst cases they encountered.”
