Maryland woman indicted in alleged $109K Medicaid fraud scheme

A Maryland woman was indicted on charges alleging she fraudulently billed the District’s Medicaid program for more than $109,000 in services she did not provide, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia announced.

Prosecutors allege Camille Aba, 32, worked as a community support worker for Family Wellness Center from 2022 to 2023, giving assistance to Medicaid beneficiaries who were clients of the center.

The D.C. Department of Health Care Finance launched an investigation into Aba following a Washington Post article about a man accused of killing two people on a D.C. street. bus. According to the authorities, Aba stated she offered services to the man days before the shooting but later amended her notes to imply she had not communicated with him.

A further investigation revealed that Aba reportedly failed to offer assistance to the man and other beneficiaries. The government believes she submitted false claims to Family Wellness Center, causing the Medicaid agency to pay more than $109,000 for services that were not given.

Aba faces 38 charges of fraud and theft, including 36 first-degree crimes.

The matter was investigated by the D.C. Inspector General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit and the United States Attorney’s Office. Linda Monroe, an assistant US attorney, is prosecuting the case.

The felony status conference is planned for December 16. No trial date has been scheduled.
