The Perry County Sheriff’s Office announced a man, who was wanted in connection to a homicide investigation in Alabama, was apprehended in Mississippi.
On September 21, 2026, the sheriff’s office received a complaint regarding a suspicious individual who had lately moved into a home in Buck Creek. The caller stated that the individual was suspected to be using an alias and perhaps hiding in Perry County to evade arrest.
When deputies arrived at the home, Perry County Sheriff Jacob Garner reported that Comer McWaters, 68, escaped into a wooded area. Deputies were unable to find him throughout the day.
Later that evening, Garner claimed to have crossed paths with McWaters. The sheriff claimed he was visiting his mother in the Buck Creek neighborhood when he seen McWaters emerge from the trees and walk onto a private lane near his mother’s house.
Garner claims he sought to make contact with McWaters, who became confrontational and aggressive while wielding two huge knives.
After a fight, Garner claimed he was able to disarm McWaters and take him into custody.
Following McWaters’ arrest and positive identification, authorities verified that he was wanted by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Alabama Attorney General’s Office as part of a homicide/murder investigation.
Alabama authorities stated McWaters was wanted in connection with the death of a female in Alabama. The investigation is underway.
McWaters is being jailed without bond in Perry County awaiting extradition to Alabama.
