Human remains discovered at Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School site

Construction crews renovating the Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School made a grim discovery last month.

Human remains were discovered at the site on Binghamton’s North Side. The Binghamton City School District said it took “immediate and respectful action” when the bodies were discovered.

The district is currently collaborating with the state’s Historic Preservation Office, State Parks, and Binghamton University’s Public Archeology Facility to unearth and relocate them.

Binghamton University referred the media to the district for details on the extent of their investigation.

Roosevelt’s new wing is being built on the former Bevier property, which was originally home to the family cemetery. Before the project began, officials utilized ground-penetrating radar to search for headstones or caskets. There were none found at the time.

The district said it is working with relatives of the Bevier family to ensure that all remains are relocated to a final resting place that honors their heritage.
