Two young people were killed and four others suffered life-threatening injuries in a fiery three-vehicle crash early Saturday in Michigan’s Thumb, police said.
According to Michigan State Police, the crash occurred around 1:30 a.m. on September 5 on Deckerville Road near Plain Road in Tuscola County’s Ellington Township.
According to the preliminary investigation, a 19-year-old Millington male was driving a 2018 Dodge Charger west on Deckerville Road when he attempted to pass a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado moving in the same direction.
The Charger hit the Silverado before hitting head-on with a 2020 Chevrolet Equinox. Police say the impact entangled all three vehicles and caused the Charger to catch fire.
The 19-year-old Charger driver and a 16-year-old Vassar boy who was a passenger in the vehicle were pronounced dead on the scene.
Two other Charger passengers, a 19-year-old Clio man and an 18-year-old Clio man, had life-threatening injuries.
The Silverado’s driver, a 19-year-old Deford man, also sustained life-threatening injuries. His passenger, a 19-year-old Croswell man, had injuries that were not life threatening.
The Equinox driver, a 19-year-old Sandusky woman, received critical injuries.
According to authorities, all six survivors of the incident were transported to surrounding hospitals for treatment.
The crash is still under investigation. Police said they haven’t determined whether speed, drinking, or other circumstances contributed to the crash.
The Tuscola County Sheriff’s Office, Kingston and Caro police departments, Caro Fire Department, and MMR all supported Michigan State Police troopers on scene.
