Mississippi man charged with poisoning and molesting child

A 60-year-old Mississippi man is behind bars on felony charges after a child tested positive for a controlled substance, according to local authorities.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office arrested Robert Earl Lofton on Tuesday after an investigation into charges of child abuse and molestation made on August 26.

Deputies launched the inquiry after obtaining information about the possible molestation of a minor. The case became more serious when subsequent medical testing revealed that the child had tested positive for an undeclared controlled substance, resulting in an additional poisoning allegation.

Lofton, a Lackey resident near Hamilton, has been officially charged with one case of child abuse by poisoning and one count of child molestation.

According to authorities, Lofton is currently being held at the Monroe County Detention Center. The judge has not yet set bond in the case, and the investigation is ongoing.
