One man is dead and 15 people are missing in Grand Canyon National Park on Monday when significant flash floods struck areas of the canyon.
According to CBS, the National Park Service discovered the body of a 46-year-old man Sunday near Crystal Rapids on the Colorado River.
“Grand Canyon National Park staff, in coordination with the Arizona Department of Public Safety, are continuing evacuation and response efforts and working to account for individuals who may have been in the affected area,” NPS stated in a statement.
According to the report, at least 62 individuals were evacuated from the hardest-hit areas, officials added.
“Nearly all footbridges spanning Bright Angel Creek were destroyed, eliminating pedestrian access across the creek,” the National Park Service said in an earlier statement.
Dozens of people were evacuated Saturday following a big flash flood in the Grand Canyon.
According to The Associated Press, the flood drove massive rocks, metal structures, and other debris into the Colorado River, which flows through the park.
According to the report, flooding occurred in Bright Angel Creek, which drains into the river, in the afternoon, prompting the park service to seek information about 15 persons who may be missing or unaccounted for.
The park service said it was working with the Arizona Department of Public Safety to continue evacuations on Sunday.
“This is a reminder of what a dynamic and active landscape the Grand Canyon is,” Jack Schmidt, director of the Center for Colorado River Studies at Utah State University, told The Associated Press.
