A Florida caregiver is being charged with elder neglect after sheriff’s officers discovered an 81-year-old dementia sufferer living in a tent outside her home.
Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Karie Lynn Lightfoot, 53, on Saturday. According to a probable cause arrest complaint, officials from the Department of Children and Families found the victim outside an Ocala, Florida house on June 3.
The victim, who had dementia and mobility challenges, told officials that Lightfoot had placed her in the tent. According to the affidavit, the tent was set up far away from the house, preventing the woman from entering.
While the tent had a mattress and basic appliances, the victim had little food and drink. According to the investigation, Lightfoot provided the victim with adult diapers but told her she had to change them herself. Investigators believe the woman had been living in the tent for about a week.
The victim’s son, who was working outside the country, informed police that Lightfoot had been caring for his mother for almost two years. Investigators claim that Lightfoot became dissatisfied with her caring responsibilities and relocated to Texas without finding alternate care for the victim.
The victim fell while left outside. Deputies took her to a local hospital for medical treatment. According to the affidavit, she is anticipated to move into a nursing home after being discharged from the hospital.
After being arrested, Lightfoot was placed into the Marion County Jail. She has now posted a $2,000 bond. A future court date has not yet been set.
