Leesburg mother apprehended after autistic 13-year-old daughter found wandering alone

A Leesburg woman was apprehended after police discovered her 13-year-old daughter, who is nonverbal and profoundly autistic, wandering alone in a store parking lot wearing a filthy diaper and just one shoe.

On July 9, Leesburg police responded to Ollie’s on West North Boulevard after witnesses reported seeing a girl walking across the parking lot without a parent or guardian nearby.

According to the affidavit, a witness assisted the girl into the store and contacted 911 when no one could find an adult accountable for her.

Police reported that the girl had feces smeared on her clothes and residue on her body. Officers also noted bruises and wounds on her arms, legs, and hands.

Lake County Fire Rescue transported the girl to the hospital for treatment. According to the affidavit, hospital staff later discovered a burn on her arm that seemed to be caused by a cigarette, as well as other bruises and scars that could have been self-inflicted.

Evans contacted 911 about 35 minutes after cops were summoned to the business, reporting that her daughter had been missing for approximately an hour, authorities said. The family’s home was roughly 0.3 mile from the store.

According to the affidavit, Evans told officers she had taken a shower before discovering her kid was missing from a bedroom. Evans gave investigators conflicting accounts of her whereabouts and the timeline.

Police stated that the child required monitoring since she was unable to care for herself. Investigators accused Evans of failing to provide proper care and supervision, as well as leaving the girl unsupervised for approximately an hour.

Evans was sent to the Lake County Jail.
