Driver taken into custody in Hancock County after police find $3M worth of chemical compound bound for Japan

A man driving a vehicle through Hancock County on Saturday morning was taken into custody after authorities discovered nearly $3 million worth of tungsten oxide powder being shipped to Japan.

According to an announcement from Greenfield police, officers were notified at 6 a.m. that a wanted semi-truck implicated in a cargo theft in Pennsylvania on Thursday was headed westbound on I-70, approaching Hancock County.

According to investigators, the driver, 31-year-old Deepak Kumar of Fresco, California, is accused of obtaining a load of approximately 40,000 pounds of tungsten oxide powder intended for shipment to Mitsubishi Materials Corporation in Japan using bogus paperwork.

According to police, Kumar falsely received cargo worth around $2,857,500.00.

The state of Pennsylvania issued an arrest warrant for Kumar, charging him with theft by unauthorised taking of movable property and criminal use of a communication service. Kumar was detained and brought to Hancock County Jail, where police said he will face criminal charges for Indiana offences.

A Mitsubishi Materials Corporation agent arrived in Greenfield on Sunday and took control of the stolen cargo. Police said the truck is being held as evidence.
