Major drug offender in Akron Sentenced to Lengthy Prison Term

An Akron man authorities have designated as a major drug offender on Monday was sentenced to 11 to 16.5 years in prison.

Michael Powell, 51, pleaded guilty in May to several offences, including:

  • One count of Trafficking in Cocaine with a Major Drug Offender Specification – a 1st Degree Felony;
  • One count of Trafficking in Cocaine with a Major Drug Offender Specification – a 1st Degree Felony;
  • Two counts of Possession of Cocaine both with Major Drug Offender Specifications – a 1st Degree Felony.

Powell faces allegations stemming from an incident in July 2024. Officers from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation spotted Powell distributing 244.5 grams of cocaine. This observation was later validated during a car stop, where the drugs were recovered.

Later that day, officers executed a search warrant at Powell’s home on Frederick Boulevard. The Drug Enforcement Administration, in coordination with the Summit County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and BCI, carried out the search. During the search, officers discovered an additional 368 grams of cocaine.

Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich extended his gratitude to the agencies involved in the investigation.

“I want to thank the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Summit County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team for their work on this case in helping bring Powell to justice,” Kolkovich stated. ” There is no tolerance in Summit County for those who bring dangerous drugs into our community.”

Under Ohio law, the threshold for being labelled as a major drug offender for cocaine is 100 grams.
