A driver carrying an Israeli driver’s license was detained Tuesday morning when a deputy found him driving at over 100 mph on State Road 44 west of Wildwood.
Moshe Yehuda Shriki, 27, of Fort Lauderdale, was arrested on a criminal charge of dangerous excessive speeding after the traffic stop.
According to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was sitting stationary in the median of State Road 44 near County Road 475 around 10:10 a.m. when he noticed a black Volkswagen SUV driving westbound at a high rate of speed. The deputy estimated that the vehicle was traveling at 100 mph. He then triggered his radar, which recorded a speed of 104 mph in a 60 mph zone.
The deputy conducted a traffic stop, and the SUV eventually came to a stop near the intersection of State Road 44 and County Road 243.
When the deputy approached the driver and only occupant, Shriki presented an Israeli driver’s license for identification. Shriki reportedly denied driving at 104 mph after learning of the reason for the stop.
Shriki was told to depart the vehicle and was handcuffed. After being told his Miranda rights, he claimed that he understood them but declined to communicate further with the deputy. A criminal background check found that he had no prior convictions.
Shriki received a felony citation for dangerous excessive speeding over 100 mph. He was taken to the Sumter County Detention Center, where he was booked and held on a $500 bond.
