Strong storms swept across parts of Kentucky and southern Illinois Sunday evening, producing damaging winds and scattered reports of storm damage across the region.

According to the National Weather Service, wind gusts of around 60 mph were common as the storms moved rapidly through western Kentucky and southern Illinois.

Several tornado warnings were issued during the storms after radar indicated areas of rotation that could have produced tornadoes. Meteorologists will review storm data to determine whether any tornadoes actually touched down.

Damage Reports Across the Region

Early damage reports were submitted from several states:

  • In Hickman County, Kentucky, two trees were blown down in the Oakton community.

  • In Calloway County, Kentucky, hail measuring nearly three-quarters of an inch in diameter was reported.

  • In southern Illinois, trees and power lines were knocked down northwest of Carbondale, Illinois, and a roof was damaged west of Marion, Illinois.

  • In Evansville, Indiana, wind gusts were estimated at 68 mph.

Meteorologists said the first storms began developing around 10 a.m. Sunday along the I-64 corridor in southern Illinois before intensifying later in the day.

Temperatures Drop Rapidly

After the storms moved through, temperatures in Paducah, Kentucky dropped more than 20 degrees within an hour.

A wind advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. Monday, with northwest wind gusts between 35 and 45 mph expected to continue.

Forecasters say temperatures will fall into the 30s Monday afternoon, with single-digit wind chills possible Tuesday morning before warmer weather returns, with highs near 70 degrees by Thursday.
