LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A proposal to build more than 100 apartments next to a residential neighborhood on Breckinridge Lane is raising concerns among nearby residents.

In December, Creekside Manor Apartments purchased land near Breckinridge Lane and Pecunnie Way. In February, the company requested a zoning change from single-family residential to multi-family residential.

Julie Johnson, who grew up in the area, said she and other neighbors want the zoning to remain single-family.

“It’s just a shame that somebody has to put up more apartments,” Johnson said. “We’re worried about drainage, we’re worried about garbage, we’re worried about light pollution.”

The proposal includes five buildings, a walking path and open space, totaling 104 apartments. Three of the buildings would be three stories tall, while the other two would be two stories.

Although Johnson believes stopping the development may be difficult, she said residents still want their concerns heard.

“If this is all going to go up, we need some space right here, we need an easement, we need a privacy fence,” Johnson said.

Neighbors also said they wish they had been informed earlier about the proposed zoning change.

“If we had gotten some kind of information beforehand, we could’ve discussed our concerns with them about changing the zoning,” Johnson said. “This has been our woods for 64 years; it’s hard to give it up.”

Residents will have the chance to share their input during a meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. on March 18 at the Wildwood Country Club, where developers plan to present the full proposal.

Creekside Manor Apartments LLC’s attorney, Cliff Ashburner, issued a statement regarding the project.

“Our client, Creekside Manor Apartments, LLC, purchased the land in December from a long-time owner and is unaware of any previous plan to develop the land with single-family homes. The proposed development has been designed to be compatible with surrounding properties and to add market-rate housing options to the busy Breckinridge Lane corridor, all in keeping with the guidelines of Plan 2040 for the development of new housing. We look forward to presenting the plan to the community and working with area stakeholders and Louisville Metro Planning staff in the months ahead.”
