LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Members of the Democratic Caucus shared an update on the upcoming I-65 construction project that will shut down the highway between Jefferson Street and I-264 in June and July.
The closure is planned so crews can replace the bridges over Kentucky and Brook Street, Hill Street and Burnett Avenue, and Bradley Avenue.
Officials said the work is necessary because the bridges have not been fully replaced since the 1960s.
The Louisville Council is reminding drivers to stay informed about the project.
“Please make sure you are signing up for updates,” Metro Councilmember JP Lyninger said. “You can get it through text or email and follow social media for the project to stay up to date. Major projects affect how we move in our city. The infrastructure is about where we gather, connect and build community.”
During the two-month closure, traffic on I-65 will be detoured to the Watterson Expressway and I-64. However, on-ramps at Jefferson Street, Liberty Street, and Muhammad Ali Boulevard will remain open.
Officials also said they are still seeking federal funding to support additional I-65 projects in the future.
