KENTUCKY — A 21-year-old inmate was discovered unresponsive early Thursday morning inside the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections.
According to LMDC officials, officers found the Hispanic male inmate at approximately 4:24 a.m. while distributing breakfast within the facility. He had been in custody since Feb. 14.
Emergency medical personnel responded to the jail, but they pronounced the man dead at the scene. Authorities are withholding his identity until they notify his family.
The LMDC Professional Standards Unit has launched an internal investigation. The Louisville Metro Police Department Public Integrity Unit has also been notified and will conduct a review, which is standard procedure in cases involving deaths in custody.
In a statement, LMDC Chief Jerry Collins expressed sympathy for the inmate’s family.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the young man,” Collins said. “We are fully investigating the incident to determine the facts of this unfortunate event.”
Officials have not released additional details as the investigation remains ongoing.
