Nearly 300 students at Portland Elementary School practiced brushing their teeth while learning about dental care during Children’s Dental Health Month.

Louisville, Ky. (WDRB) — Nearly 300 students at Portland Elementary School dedicated part of their day to building healthy smiles.

Kindergarten through fifth grade students took part Monday in a teeth-brushing exercise designed to teach them the importance of proper dental care.

UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Kentucky supported the event by donating time, supplies, and expertise. As part of February’s Children’s Dental Health Month, students practiced brushing while learning about oral hygiene and proper cleaning techniques.

Health officials said lessons like these carry particular importance in Kentucky. According to America’s Health Rankings, only six out of 10 Kentucky adults report visiting a dentist each year.

School leaders said the hands-on approach helps students better grasp the daily habits required to keep their teeth and gums healthy.
