LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville Metro Police are standing behind their use of Flock cameras.

Flock cameras operate as license plate readers that allow law enforcement to capture vehicle data.

In the past, LMPD stated that Flock cameras have helped officers identify suspects.

The department discussed the cameras during a Metro Council meeting Wednesday night.

“Automated license plate readers turns a needle in a haystack – a link for a needle in a haystack to a beacon for officers and detectives,” Deputy Chief Emily McKinley said. “It provides real time actionable intelligence when every second matters when we talk about serious, violent crime in our city.”

McKinley said LMPD currently has more than 240 cameras in operation.

She clarified that not all of them are Flock-branded.
