The Commonwealth Attorney’s Office secured 2,300 convictions in 2025; 20% involved firearms
2026 priorities focus on integrity, compassion and accountability
Youth crime strategy prioritizes education and community involvement, not just prosecution
Just one month into 2026, Whethers outlined updated goals for her office, stressing integrity, compassion and accountability.
“When cases meet the threshold, we prosecute,” Whethers said. “I don’t care what color the defendant is. I don’t care what age they are. We have a responsibility to keep our community safe.”
In 2025, the office won convictions against 2,300 defendants, with firearms involved in 20% of those cases.
Addressing youth crime remains a key priority this year. However, Whethers said her approach centers more on community education and engagement rather than relying solely on prosecuting minors.
“I do believe that we approach youth cases differently than adult cases,” Whethers said. “Our adults, we prosecute for deterrence. With kids, it’s different; you have to get parents, caretakers and the community involved.”
The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office partnered with community activist Christopher 2X to create a public service announcement that honors the well-known “Do You Know Where Your Kids Are?” campaign.
For the past 20 years, 2X has collaborated with the office, concentrating on child health and safety initiatives.
“It was no big lift for us to be involved, especially in child-safety messaging, because it’s the right thing to do,” 2X said. “Regardless of views on crime, most people support advocating for safe, healthy kids.”
Community outreach and collaboration remain at the heart of the office’s mission, with ongoing efforts to educate residents about ways they can participate through committees and commissions.
