The Kentucky Treasurer’s Office is encouraging residents to search for unclaimed property that may be held in their name.
National Unclaimed Property Day was observed on Feb. 1, and Kentucky Treasurer Mark H. Metcalf said Kentuckians should take a few minutes to see whether the state is holding money that belongs to them by searching the unclaimed property database at treasury.ky.gov or missingmoney.com.
According to the Treasurer’s Office, millions of dollars in unclaimed property are turned over to the state each year. These assets include forgotten bank accounts, uncashed checks, insurance proceeds, and utility deposits, which are held by the treasury for safekeeping. Metcalf said $86 million has been returned to rightful owners since he took office in 2024.
The office also noted that residents can search the database for deceased loved ones to determine whether unclaimed funds or assets exist in their names. The state’s unclaimed property fund currently contains assets valued at nearly $800 million.
The Treasurer’s Office processes unclaimed property claims at no cost. Assets are reported under the owner’s name and Social Security number, along with additional identifying information when available.
