LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A former aluminum plant in western Kentucky has been sold and is set to be redeveloped into a data center.

Century Aluminum announced the sale of its Hawesville facility. The site will be redeveloped by TeraWulf into a digital infrastructure campus designed to support what the company calls high-performance computing and artificial intelligence workloads.

As data centers continue to expand in Kentucky and around the Louisville area, communities are raising concerns about the impact on water usage, electricity demand, and local oversight.

Several data centers have already opened across the region, and plans are in place for another facility in south Louisville.

In response, Metro Council is working on an ordinance aimed at establishing guardrails related to the significant water and power needs required to operate data centers.

Meanwhile, proposed data center projects in Meade and Oldham counties have been shut down.
