FRANKFORT, Ky. — Kentucky State Treasurer Mark H. Metcalf is urging residents to check whether the Commonwealth is holding unclaimed money in their name.
The reminder follows National Unclaimed Property Day, which was observed on Feb. 1.
Metcalf said that since taking office, his administration has returned a record $86 million in unclaimed property to Kentuckians.
“Every dollar we return is a dollar back in the hands of families, small businesses, and nonprofits,” Metcalf said. “That’s why we’ve focused on making this program faster, more transparent, and easier to use.”
Each year, millions of dollars in unclaimed property are turned over to the treasurer’s office for safekeeping. According to the office, this property can include uncashed checks, insurance proceeds, and utility deposits.
The treasurer’s office said it works year-round to track down rightful owners and return the funds.
“We’re not here to sit on money—we’re here to return it,” Metcalf said. “Being a good steward of the people’s assets means cutting through red tape and reconnecting Kentuckians with what’s rightfully theirs.”
