WEST LIBERTY, Ky. — The family of Marvin Knuckles, 48, who died while in custody at the Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex, is demanding answers and accountability following his death during a winter storm. Knuckles was serving a 12-year sentence on drug-related charges.
Circumstances of Death
According to the Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet, Knuckles fell and hit his head while removing ice and snow at the prison. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died.
However, Knuckles’ sister, Rita Alexander, learned from Morgan County Coroner Shawn VanCleave that her brother had fallen from a 40-foot embankment while clearing ice and snow — reportedly without any safety gear, fences, or harnesses.
Alexander said:
“They were on a 40-foot embankment with no kind of safety gear, no fence, no harness, or anything… Their lives matter, and they should’ve had safety gear or something to catch them if they fell.”
Family Reaction
Knuckles’ family described the loss as devastating. His sister, Michelle Wright, shared that their mother had not yet been told, saying:
“I’m afraid we’re going to have two funerals because she’s old and she’s sick… She and Marvin were really close, and she worried about him all the time.”
The family is now seeking accountability and clarity about the circumstances of Knuckles’ death. They continue to cherish memories, pictures, and letters from him, including a birthday card Wright read aloud:
“I love you, and I miss you… Hopefully, I will make it home next year. I love you, your baby boy.”
Official Response
Governor Andy Beshear addressed the situation at a Team Kentucky news conference, stating:
“What I want to make sure is that the full truth comes out and that we’re fully transparent. Decisions made, good or bad, they deserve to be seen by that family and by everyone else.”
Knuckles’ death is one of several winter weather-related fatalities reported across Kentucky this season, highlighting concerns over safety protocols for inmates assigned to outdoor work during hazardous conditions.
