LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Jefferson County Public Schools is revising its proposed $142 million budget cut plan, opting to preserve academic instructional coaches while considering reductions to mental health practitioner positions, according to a source familiar with the discussions.

During a Zoom meeting with principals Friday, Superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood said the district will no longer eliminate academic instructional coach roles after principals raised concerns. Instead, JCPS is now considering cutting mental health practitioners at schools outside the Enhanced Support Zone, which includes Accelerated Improvement Schools and those in a Choice Zone.

Under the revised plan, instructional coaches would remain based in schools, while mental health practitioners would be centralized. It’s unclear whether the change would result in the same savings as the original proposal, which aimed to save more than $14 million by cutting instructional coach positions.

The revised plan is part of JCPS’ effort to close a projected $188 million budget shortfall through $142 million in planned cuts. This article has been carefully fact-checked by our editorial team to ensure accuracy and eliminate any misleading information.
