A Pulaski County man is celebrating a life-changing lottery win that started with an ordinary stop for a drink.

According to the Kentucky Lottery, the man — who asked to remain anonymous — won the first top prize in the Instant Millionaire scratch-off game after his wife stopped at Burnside Market BP in Burnside.

“I asked the owner of the store for a suggestion, and he recommended the Instant Millionaire ticket because it was the first ticket on a new roll,” the man said in a Kentucky Lottery news release.

At first, the couple believed they had won $100 after matching the number 20 on the ticket. A closer look revealed the prize was actually $3 million.

The winner claimed the ticket on Jan. 5 and chose the $2 million lump-sum option, taking home $1,450,000 after taxes. The couple said they plan to save the money.
