The new year brings a revised Social Security payment schedule, and Americans are being urged to watch for several important changes.
The updates will affect millions of beneficiaries, including a calendar quirk that results in three months with no payments for some recipients.
The Social Security Administration sends monthly benefits to nearly 79 million people, with payments issued according to a set schedule. Social Security retirement benefits are distributed based on a beneficiary’s date of birth.
Those born between the 1st and 10th receive payments on the second Wednesday of each month. People with birthdays between the 11th and 20th are paid on the third Wednesday, while those born between the 21st and 31st receive checks on the fourth Wednesday.
In January 2026, for instance, retirement payments will be sent on January 14, 21 and 28. February payments will follow on February 11, 18 and 25.

Another major program overseen by the SSA is Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, which provides benefits to people based on financial need who are 65 or older, blind or disabled.
SSI payments follow a different schedule than retirement benefits. They are typically paid on the first of each month unless that date falls on a weekend or federal holiday. When that happens, payments are issued on the previous business day. This can result in double payments during some months and no payments during others.
For example, in January 2026, SSI recipients will receive a payment on January 30 because February 1 falls on a Sunday.
In March, SSI beneficiaries will not receive a payment, as March’s check will be issued early on February 27 since March 1 falls on a weekend.
August is another month without an SSI payment in 2026. Because August 1 is a Saturday, the payment will be sent early on July 31, making July a double-payment month.
November is also affected. Since November 1 falls on a weekend, SSI benefits will be paid on October 30, leaving no payment in November.
People who began collecting Social Security before May 1997, as well as those who receive both retirement benefits and SSI, follow a different schedule. In those cases, Social Security is paid on the 3rd of the month and SSI on the 1st.
Americans receiving Social Security retirement benefits or SSI in 2026 will also see a 2.8% increase in their monthly payments compared to 2025, thanks to the annual cost-of-living adjustment.
