CLAIBORNE CO., Tenn. (WSMV) — A second minor earthquake has struck near the Tennessee-Kentucky border in less than a week.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported Sunday’s earthquake as a magnitude 2.6, with its epicenter north of Knoxville. While few people reported feeling the tremor, impacts were noted as far north as Campbellsville, Kentucky.
The University of Memphis Center for Earthquake Research and Information confirmed the quake, placing it near the border, just a short distance from Middlesboro, Kentucky.
This latest tremor comes a week after a magnitude 3.1 earthquake near Lancaster, Kentucky, on December 28. That earlier quake was slightly stronger and had wider effects, with the Kentucky Geological Survey describing it as “on the larger side of earthquakes we have recorded in Central Kentucky.” Some residents said it felt like someone had run a vehicle into their home.
No damage has been reported from Sunday’s 2.6 magnitude quake.
