LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A man is hospitalized after being shot during an armed robbery at a neighborhood store in the Wyandotte area, just a few blocks from Churchill Downs.

Louisville Metro Police say the incident occurred around 9:10 p.m. on January 1, 2026, at the 1313 Food Mart on the 900 block of Denmark Street. Investigators reported that two masked individuals held up store employees and shot a worker before fleeing the scene.

Josephine Ross and her husband, who witnessed the aftermath, said they arrived just as the suspects left the building. “They had masks on, shoving rifles under their jackets, and they ran out the door right here,” Ross said.

Police and the couple said the suspects ran through an alley across the street, which is lined with security cameras from nearby homes and a church.

By Friday morning, business had returned to normal. The clerk shot in the stomach during the robbery is expected to survive. Security cameras inside the store captured clear images of the suspects, though the business declined to release the video.

Ross’s husband recalled speaking with another employee after the shooting. “The young kid in there was shook up. He said, ‘They got all my money, and I thought I was going to get shot too.’”

The couple, former residents of the area, hope the LMPD quickly apprehends the suspects. “They’re good people. They know the neighborhood,” Ross’s husband said. “Hopefully they catch these guys pretty quick.”

The LMPD Robbery Unit is leading the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the LMPD Anonymous Tip Line at (502) 574-LMPD (5673) or submit tips via the online Crime Tip Portal.
